Ceramics: Mugs & Dishes
SATURDAY 6th JUNE 10am to 1pm £45 In this workshop, you will learn how to create functional hand-built ceramics, using the slab building technique. This morning session will focus on mugs and dishes, building essential skills and giving you pieces you can both admire, and use. The use of black stoneware clay will result in striking finished pieces. NOTE: There is an afternoon session also, both are standalone, but we recommend booking both together to make a full day. What to expect: Students will begin to learn how to work with clay, including all the skills needed to successfully slab build practical containers. You will learn how to: • Make slabs with consistent thickness • Craft your slabs into cylinder-based forms • Create and attach handles that are both beautiful and functional • Explore various methods for adding surface texture to your forms, transforming simple slabs into expressive works of art Once your pieces are formed, they will be taken away and professionally fired. You will be able to choose from a selection of glazes. Once fired, they will be available to collect from either Faversham or Broadstairs, around four weeks after the workshop. What you’ll take away: • At least two black clay pieces, including a mug • The skills required to make bold, beautiful and functional ceramics • An infectious love of clay, and all its possibilities Suitable for: Complete beginners, those looking for a refresher, or novice potters looking to add to their skillset. No experience of working with clay is required. What to bring: • Please bring an apron or wear old clothes. • You may like to bring a packed lunch. • All other materials included. Your tutor: Carolina Pik is an Argentinean-Chilean ceramist living and making pots in Margate. Her work is mostly hand-built ceramics, inspired by interior design, Brutalist architecture, maths and geometry. The use of black stoneware clay and white porcelain, often combined with vivid glazes, gives her stunning work a high contrast, dramatic and distinctive style.
