Exploring Chemigrams
SUNDAY 12TH OCTOBER 12.30 - 3.30pm What is a Chemigram? A chemigram is a unique form of experimental photographic art made without a camera or darkroom. Instead, everyday substances - like oil, glue, or soap - are applied to light-sensitive paper under normal lighting conditions. These materials act as resists, altering how the paper reacts when it’s dipped into photographic developer and fixative. Unlike traditional photography, there’s no right or wrong order - applying developer and fixer in any sequence creates surprising and often unpredictable results. The developer turns areas dark or black, while the fixer preserves lighter tones. The outcome? A wide range of visual effects, from psychedelic swirls to cubist shapes and abstract forms. Suitable for: Adults of all skill levels; no previous experience required. What to bring: • All materials and equipment are provided for this session. You don’t need to bring anything with you - just come ready to experiment! • Please bring a bag, folder or envelopes to safely take home your wet prints. What you'll take away: • A selection of your own chemigram prints • An information sheet outlining the process so you can continue experimenting at home Your tutor: Emily Rose Parris is an experienced photographer & arts educator. Read more about Emily on our Tutors page. Tea and coffee is provided. Parking at the weekend is easily available just outside. We're on the first floor with no lift.
