Exploring cyanotype
Description
What is a cyanotype? The cyanotype printing technique is one of the earliest forms of photography, invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel and made famous by botanist and artist, Anna Atkins. A cyanotype print is created by exposing UV sensitive paper to UV light. First, objects are laid on top of the UV sensitive paper and exposed to UV light. Once the print has been exposed for a period of time, the print is washed in water to fix the image to the page. The outcome is a striking blue & white silhouette image of the object you laid on top. What will this workshop cover? In this workshop you will begin arranging objects onto UV sensitive paper and expose it to sunlight. (If the weather is poor, we will be using UV lightboxes in place of the sun). Once you have got to grips with the printing process, you will create some more prints onto fabric. Lastly, you will plan an arrangement and then print it onto a canvas bag. Taking your prints home: Please note that the cyanotype printed bags may still be wet. You will take your prints home on the same day, please bring along an envelope or bag to put your images in. Who is this workshop for? This workshop is aimed at beginners up, no previous experience is needed. This particular workshop is aimed at adults. Do I need to bring anything along? Materials and equipment are provided for this session, however feel free to bring along a small selection of objects to use on your prints to make them personal to you, for example; buttons, seaweed, feathers, plants/flowers.
