PRINTMAKING: Gelli plate

SUNDAY 27th JUNE 10am to 4pm Perfect for beginners, and mixed-media artists who are looking to expand printing skills, this workshop will guide you through the basics of using a gelli plate to create beautiful, textured prints using recycled materials and found objects. Through step-by-step demonstrations, participants will explore how to build rich, layered textures and colours for creative and versatile results. A gelli plate is a sensitive, flexible printing surface that captures fine details and textures with remarkable precision. Unlike traditional printmaking, it requires no heavy press—simply the pressure of your hands. Under expert guidance, you will explore the foundations of this contemporary technique, learning how to roll out smooth layers of acrylic paint and manipulate the surface to produce beautiful, highly detailed and textured prints. Through clear, step-by-step demonstrations, you will be guided through the entire creative process, learning how to: • Master the paint and plate: Understand how to apply ink smoothly and combine colours directly on the plate to create seamless gradients and vibrant backdrops. • Incorporate found objects: Discover how ordinary, recycled materials and found objects—such as textured packaging, lace, stencils, and botanical elements—can be used to leave beautiful imprints. • Masking and positive/negative space: Learn how to block out areas of your design to create crisp shapes, silhouettes, and intricate windows of colour. • Build rich, complex layers: Master the art of overprinting, allowing previous layers to dry before lifting new textures on top to create an arresting illusion of depth. By the end of this gelli printing session you will take home a vibrant collection of experimental papers, perfect for use in sketchbooks, collage projects, or as standalone art prints. Suitable for all levels. What to bring: All materials are provided. Please bring an apron or wear old clothes. You may like to bring a packed lunch. Your tutor: Anne Davison is an established artist and printmaker, with a worldwide spread of clients and collectors. She is also an experienced tutor. You can read more about Anne on our Tutors page. Tea and coffee is provided, and you are welcome to use our small kitchen. There is a corner shop a short walk away, and parking at the weekend is easily available just outside.
