BOOKBINDING: Japanese Stab Binding
SUNDAY 13th JUNE 10am to 4.30pm In this one day bookbinding workshop with Hope Fitzgerald from Bindfulness, you will learn bookbinding techniques, specifically looking at the art of Japanese stab binding, inspired by Master Craftsman, Kojiro Ikegami. Japanese stab binding (fukuro toji) is a traditional, beginner-friendly, and decorative bookbinding method characterized by exposed stitching along a solid spine, often using four holes. This is a great technique for binding single sheets, ideal for artists and image makers. As well as learning this technique, you will also be able to choose from Hope's beautiful collection of papers. You will use hand printed, one of a kind, suminagashi marbled paper, chiyogami paper, and other decorative papers, along with linen or hemp thread to make your own uniquely designed books. In the workshop you will learn about: • The selection of materials • Paper grain • Cover preparation • Various four hole binding styles • Some common bookbinding tools and how to use them safely What to bring: All materials, including paper, board, papers, bookcloth, linen thread and adhesive to make your own uniquely designed books are included. Tools are provided for use on the day. Tea, coffee and biscuits or cake will be provided. You may like to bring a packed lunch What you'll take away: You’ll take away your unique handbound books, new skills, and the satisfaction and well-being of a day spent creatively. Creative Courses is a multi-use creative space. Tea and coffee, quality teaching, and materials are provided… you just turn up and enjoy your day. There is plenty of parking and the venue is 15 minutes walk from Faversham train station. The Creative Courses workshop is on the first floor of Unit 1C. There is no lift.
