CERAMICS: Nerikomi Decorations

SATURDAY 7th NOVEMBER 10am to 1pm £55 Nerikomi is one of the most satisfying techniques in ceramics; where contrasting colour and pattern are built directly into the clay itself. In this session, you will make a selection of festive decorations. You will blend black and white clays to create striking graphic patterns. Using hand-building methods, you'll form the clay into a selection of festive shapes, creating decorations to hang on your tree, or give as gifts. If you would like, and time allows, you may also make a small tealight holder. What to expect : • Learn or revisit the fundamentals of working with clay • Explore various methods for creating patterns with black and white clays • Learn how to roll your slab, then cut and finish your shapes ready for the kiln Suitable for: All levels welcome. No previous experience of working with clay is required, but will also be an enjoyable session for more experienced potters. What's included: • Black and white clay • All tools for use on the day • Firing and glazing The number of pieces you can make will depend on the size of your decorations - clay is given by weight. Once your pieces are formed, they will be taken away and professionally fired. Once fired, they will be available to collect from either Faversham or Broadstairs, around four weeks after the workshop. What you’ll take away: • A selection of Nerikomi style and/or marbled decorations, a small tealight holder • Knowledge of how to begin to work with clay, and the Nerikomi technique • An infectious love of clay, and all its possibilities What to bring: • Please bring an apron or wear old clothes. • All other materials included Your tutor: Carolina Pik is an Argentinean-Chilean ceramist living and making pots in Margate. Her work is mostly hand-built ceramics, inspired by interior design, Brutalist architecture, maths and geometry. The use of black stoneware clay and white porcelain, often combined with vivid glazes, gives her stunning work a high contrast, dramatic and distinctive style.
