Fountain Pen Ink: Concertina Sketchbook

SATURDAY 21st NOVEMBER 10am to 4pm Fountain Pen Ink Art – Concertina Sketchbook In this full day workshop, you will utilise and experiment with fountain pen inks, enabling you to create unique and fascinating works using this extremely diverse art medium. This will prove valuable and enjoyable for anyone who keeps sketch books and art journals, or would like to. What to expect Suitable for all ages and abilities, this workshop will give the necessary techniques and tips to allow students to work with ink colours, explore their unique properties and their reactions with bleach, creating an entirely new and experimental approach to illustration. Each student will receive an 8-page concertina sketchbook in which to work throughout the day. Initially you will learn all about the medium and how to harness the chromatography inherent within certain inks. Students will create dramatic skies and striking landscapes, and be taught how to bring visual impact to a monochromatic scene. Using the visual references provided, you will then be shown how to layout and sketch throughout the concertina book, using light pads to make this process simple and straightforward. You may also wish to bring your own visual reference* After lunch, using the techniques learned throughout the morning, students will fill their books with artwork using a range of chromatic inks, mark-making tools and bleach to add highlights. *Please ensure your imagery is high contrast, black and white on a standard 80gm copy paper and scaled to fit: 130mmx130mm for single page, 130mmx260mm for double page, 130mmx520mm for 4 page spreads. What you’ll take away • Your finished 8-page concertina book of artwork. • The skills and confidence to continue experimenting at home or in the studio. • An infectious curiosity for all the amazing possibilities of this versatile medium. Your tutor Nick has spent much of his working life at some of London’s top creative agencies and design studios as a designer, visualiser and lettering specialist. He also spent 8 years at the University for the Creative Arts as a sessional tutor. Since 2015, he has been engaged with a personal project of re-imagining fountain pen inks as a creative medium for lettering and illustration. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, and you are welcome to use our small kitchen. There is a shop a short walk away, and parking at the weekend is easily available just outside. We're on the first floor, with no lift access.
